John Deere Classic 2024 Prize Money Payout

The PGA Tour marches on toward the FedEx Cup playoffs with this week’s John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Austria’s Sepp Straka, the defending champion, returns to compete after triumphing by two shots over Alex Smalley and Brendon Todd at the 2023 tournament, claiming his second PGA Tour title.

Since its inception in 1972, the John Deere Classic has been an official PGA Tour event. It has been held at TPC Deere Run since 2000 and has been the backdrop for several notable golf moments. For example, in 2005 and 2006, the then-LPGA Tour player Michelle Wie received a sponsor’s exemption to compete against male professionals despite being only 15 and 16 years old. While she missed the cut on her first attempt and withdrew during the second round in 2006, she was invited again in 2007 but pulled out before the tournament started. Additionally, Steve Stricker won the event three years consecutively from 2009 to 2011, setting the event’s scoring record at 26-under, which was later surpassed by Michael Kim’s victory in 2018.

Another historic moment came in 2013 when Jordan Spieth became the youngest player ever to win a PGA Tour event at 19 years old, clinching the John Deere Classic in a playoff against future Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson and Canada’s David Hearn.

Despite a steady increase in the total prize purse since 2015, with an additional $600,000 included in the 2024 fund, the John Deere Classic remains the primary PGA Tour event with the smallest prize purse this season. The total purse for 2024 is $8 million, with the winner set to receive $1,440,000. When Straka won last year, he earned $1,332,000 from a $7.4 million total purse.

This year’s tournament offers more than just prize money, as it also includes two spots for the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Troon later this month.
