John Fury, father of boxing heavyweight Tyson Fury, has reassured fans that his son will not withdraw from his upcoming fight against Oleksandr Usyk. This comes after Tyson Fury pulled out of the bout for the second time due to sustaining a significant cut over his right eye during sparring, causing him to miss the scheduled match on February 17. The initial bout, slated for December 23 of the previous year, was also postponed after Fury’s victory against Francis Ngannou left him with insufficient recovery time.
The stakes have been raised further as Turki AlalShikh announced a hefty $10 million fine for either fighter should they fail to make the rescheduled date. Despite concerns over Fury’s withdrawal history, John Fury dismissed any worries, especially amidst discussions of a potential bout between Fury and Anthony Joshua.
John Fury emphasized the challenges Tyson faces, particularly the looming presence of Ngannou, whom he believes poses a significant threat. Additionally, Fury’s previous losses to Usyk have led to speculation about the public’s interest in a potential rematch. Nevertheless, John Fury affirmed Tyson’s commitment to the Usyk fight, stating, “Tyson will not be pulling out.”
However, Usyk’s camp holds a different perspective. With a clause in his contract allowing him to face Filip Hrgovic in the event of Fury’s withdrawal, doubts linger about Fury’s reliability. Usyk’s former coach, James Ali Bashir, expressed skepticism about Fury’s readiness, citing his history of withdrawal, as well as concerns about the severity of Fury’s recent cut.
Bashir raised doubts about the proposed May fight date, suggesting a postponement to June or July to ensure adequate time for Fury’s injury to heal. He also criticized Fury’s training practices, highlighting the risks associated with sparring without proper headgear.
As speculation and anticipation surround the rescheduled bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, both camps remain cautiously optimistic, with questions lingering about Fury’s ability to recover and commit to the fight.
