Jon Rahm and LIV Golf players have caused a stir at Augusta National ahead of this year’s Masters tournament, with their bold decision to sport apparel from the breakaway series. Despite previous agreements to refrain from displaying logos and branding associated with LIV Golf during major tournaments, Rahm and others were seen proudly wearing their Legion XIII gear, including hats emblazoned with the LIV logo, during practice sessions and even on the course.
This move marks a significant departure from last year’s Masters, where LIV participants opted not to showcase such branding in a gesture of respect. Even Phil Mickelson, a prominent figure in the LIV Golf movement, adhered to the agreement last year by abstaining from displaying his HyFlyers team emblem on his attire. However, this year, Mickelson was seen wearing his HyFlyers cap during practice, signaling a potential shift in stance.
Other players, including Bryson DeChambeau, also proudly displayed their allegiance to LIV Golf by wearing their team caps and using branded golf bags. Notably, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka chose to stick with traditional golf brands like TaylorMade and Nike for their headgear.
Rahm’s decision to join LIV Golf has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the PGA Tour, especially considering his status as the defending Masters champion. His departure from the PGA Tour may have accelerated discussions between the rival factions, as recent talks have been described as ‘constructive’ by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.
Reflecting on the ramifications of his move, Rahm acknowledged the weight of his decision and the potential disruption it could cause to the balance of golf. Despite this, he remains resolute in his choice and understands the impact he could have as one of the sport’s leading figures.
As discussions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour continue, the presence of LIV-branded apparel at Augusta signals a new chapter in the ongoing battle for control and influence within the world of professional golf.
