Jon Rahm nearly made a stunning return to the DP World Tour last week, narrowly missing out on victory in a playoff against fellow Spaniard Angel Hidalgo at the Spanish Open in Madrid. His performance boosted him to eighth place in the early Ryder Cup standings, where the top six will automatically secure a spot on the European team for next year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
Rahm will get another opportunity to climb the rankings at this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. The tournament features 14 LIV Golf players, including five-time Major champion Brooks Koepka, with event sponsor Johann Rupert, a South African billionaire, showing little concern for the ongoing divisions in golf. The players will compete across three iconic links courses: Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, and the Old Course at St Andrews.
Time is running out for Rahm, who needs to make these events count if he wants to qualify for the Ryder Cup automatically. To participate in DP World Tour events, he must either pay the fines imposed for playing in LIV tournaments or appeal them.
