The MLB regular season has kicked off in South Korea, but free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery is still waiting for a team. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as the New York Yankees have rekindled discussions with him.
Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported on Wednesday that the Yankees are back in contact with Montgomery, who started his career with the team. Drafted by the Yankees in 2014, Montgomery made his MLB debut with them in 2017. He remained with the AL East squad until 2022 when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Harrison Bader at the deadline. His stint with the Cardinals was impressive, and he continued his success after being flipped to the Texas Rangers at the 2023 trade deadline, helping them clinch the World Series title.
Throughout his career, Montgomery has accumulated a record of 38-34 with a commendable 3.68 ERA and 705 strikeouts over 755 innings pitched. His postseason performance has also been noteworthy, boasting a 3-1 record with a 2.63 ERA.
Despite Montgomery’s achievements, the Yankees reportedly harbor some reservations, citing concerns about his velocity and strikeout numbers. However, they still hold an overall positive view of him and are considering signing him, particularly with ace Gerrit Cole expected to miss time at the start of the season.
The Yankees have made significant moves this offseason, notably acquiring Juan Soto, signaling their intent to contend. Recognizing their need for pitching reinforcements, they see Montgomery as a potential solution on a short-term contract, bolstering their rotation for the upcoming season.
