Jordan Spieth is acutely aware of the challenge ahead.
The three-time major champion enters the final tournament of the regular season, the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., ranked No. 63 in the FedEx Cup standings. With the top 70 players advancing to the FedEx Cup playoffs, Spieth needs a strong performance at Sedgefield Country Club to secure his spot.
Spieth has qualified for the playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons and aims to continue that streak. A good showing this week is essential for Spieth to move forward to the BMW Championship, the second leg of the playoffs. Only the top 50 players after the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, will advance to the BMW and secure a place in next season’s signature events.
Spieth expressed his enthusiasm for the Wyndham Championship on Tuesday, saying, “I think this is one of the better tracks that we get the opportunity to play all year. It has a lot of drama, especially with the playoffs moving to 70 players. Whether it’s the playoffs or people making moves for eligibility, there’s a lot at stake at this event.”
“My goal this week is to move up as far as I can in the FedEx Cup and head into the playoffs on a high note. I love the golf course; I think it’s spectacular. You can’t hide your game.”
Reflecting on his past experiences at this tournament, Spieth recalled his close call in 2013, where he lost in a playoff to Patrick Reed. This season has been a mixed bag for Spieth, with three top-10 finishes in 20 events and six missed cuts. He recently finished T25 at The Open Championship, shooting a 70 in the final round.
“My last event was The Open, and I had a really good final round. I’m trying to build on that,” Spieth said. “I played in some pretty tough conditions that Sunday and thought finishing on a high note there might help this week. I wasn’t sure if I was going to play, but I’m really glad to be here. There’s no focus on next week; it’s all about this week.”
Spieth also addressed concerns about a lingering wrist injury that has affected his performance this year.
“It’s been a frustrating year because it might be my best driving year ever, and then the clubs I make the most impact with, normally my bread and butter, have been pretty off,” Spieth said. “It’s not hurting, but subconsciously it’s hard not to look at the numbers and think this isn’t a coincidence.”
He remains optimistic, adding, “I’m going to pretend nothing’s happening, fully trust it given that I’ll be able to get it fixed. I know there’s a lot of golfers that have had similar situations and come back better than ever.”
As Spieth prepares for the Wyndham Championship, he is focused on performing well and securing his place in the playoffs, hoping to carry the momentum into the next stages of the FedEx Cup.
