Jordan Spieth, renowned for his illustrious career in golf, has had the rare opportunity to witness two of his playing partners shoot an incredible 59 on the PGA Tour. Despite these impressive performances, Spieth maintains that neither round holds a candle to another remarkable display of golfing prowess he witnessed.
Recently, Spieth played alongside Cameron Young, who fired an astonishing 11-under-par 59 during the third round of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. This remarkable feat comes seven years after Spieth watched his close friend Justin Thomas achieve a similarly spectacular round, scoring 59 at the Sony Open in Hawaii with a thrilling long eagle putt on the final hole.
However, Spieth asserts that neither of these rounds was the best he has seen. Instead, he points to Bryson DeChambeau’s extraordinary 60 at the 2021 BMW Championship as the most impressive. Spieth was on hand to witness DeChambeau’s masterful performance at Caves Valley, where the US Open champion made light work of the par-72 course, barely missing a chance to break 60 after a narrow miss on a six-foot putt at the last hole.
Reflecting on the best round he has ever seen, Spieth said, “I would say Bryson that day because it was a par 72. That might be the answer on those three rounds. I remember thinking both Cam and Justin were right in it at the beginning. There’s definitely an argument for JT because he knew he needed eagle (on the final hole) and made a 15-foot slider. That’s a little bit different. That was the most clutch of the three.”
The statistics back up Spieth’s bold statement. DeChambeau’s dazzling round at Caves Valley saw him gain a staggering 9.913 strokes on the field, eclipsing Thomas’ 59, which resulted in a 9.249 strokes gained. Young’s 59 at the Travelers Championship ranked third with 7.845 strokes gained, achieved amidst prime scoring conditions at TPC River Highlands.
DeChambeau’s brilliant 60 at Caves Valley was so statistically impressive that it even surpassed his exceptional 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier last year. Despite securing a six-stroke victory with his 58, the data suggests his performance at the BMW Championship was even more outstanding. The Greenbrier, known for its relatively easier course setup that week, saw DeChambeau gain 8.74 strokes on the field with his 58, but the challenge at Caves Valley proved his superior skill.
Cameron Young, currently ranked 23rd in the world, has experienced a challenging season and is regarded as one of the best players on the PGA Tour yet to secure a victory. His performance at the Travelers Championship served as a reminder of his immense talent.
Reflecting on his achievement, Young said, “I can’t say I was expecting it. I’ve been playing better than the results have shown. Waking up this morning, I wasn’t really thinking I was going to be five-under through four. It was a lot of fun to do. To have a day like today where things start going in, and it feels like you’re rewarded for good shots, it leaves me with a good taste in my mouth.”
