Justin Thomas Faces Disappointment But Announces Major Life Event
On Tuesday, Justin Thomas received the tough news that he wouldn’t be part of this year’s U.S. Presidents Cup team. This marks the first time since the 2012 Ryder Cup that neither Thomas nor his close friend Jordan Spieth will represent the American side in a team event. However, despite this setback on the golf course, Thomas has a joyful announcement that promises brighter days ahead: he and his wife, Jillian, are expecting their first child this fall.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Thomas expressed his disappointment at not making the team but also shared his understanding and support for the decision. He acknowledged the strength of the team assembled by U.S. Captain Jim Furyk and committed to cheering them on from afar.
“I’m obviously very bummed to not be joining the boys in Canada for the Presidents Cup,” Thomas wrote. “But completely understanding Jim [Furyk] has put together a great team. I will be the first one pulling for them and watching, while using it as motivation to not miss a team event again as they are some of my favorite weeks I’ve had.”
Thomas also reflected on the unexpected time off, mentioning that it would allow him to focus on areas of improvement, attend to his foundation’s activities, and enjoy some rest and relaxation. Most importantly, the break will coincide with a significant personal milestone—becoming a father in late November.
“It will be nice to have some time to work on things, foundation event, some R&R, and even become a dad at the end of November!” he added. “While I’m excited for the ‘off season,’ I’m already looking forward to practicing and getting ready for Maui. Thanks to everybody for countless support and kind words as I always appreciate it. That’s enough of me getting in my feels for today.”
Thomas’ announcement completes a remarkable chapter for the original #SB2K16 crew, a close-knit group of young golfers who took a memorable trip to the Bahamas in 2016. With Thomas’s news, all four members of the group—Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman, and Thomas himself—are now fathers. Spieth led the way, welcoming his first child, son Sammy, in November 2021. Just days later, Fowler celebrated the birth of his daughter, Maya. Kaufman followed in January 2023 with the arrival of his daughter, Anna. Now, with Thomas’s upcoming addition, the circle is complete. Spieth and Fowler have even welcomed second children since then.
In his post, Thomas also took a moment to commend Scottie Scheffler for his “incredible and inspiring” season. He expressed pride in showing signs of improvement in 2024 after a challenging 2023, but acknowledged there is still work to be done.
“Finishing the year in Atlanta is something I never want to take for granted,” Thomas noted. “I look forward to working to get back there next year.”
This past year, Thomas’s season began later than usual, starting with the 2024 American Express after missing out on the Sentry Tournament of Champions for the first time since 2015. Despite the setback, he earned his place in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings, securing his return to Maui in January. As the 2025 season approaches, Thomas will be focused on breaking his winless streak, which dates back to the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
Though missing out on the Presidents Cup is a blow, Thomas remains optimistic and driven as he looks forward to the next chapter—both in his career and in his personal life.
