Czech tennis player Karolina Muchova has equaled a long-standing record held by former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova, securing the most wins against top-five opponents in Grand Slams after just six matches. Muchova achieved this milestone after a dominant performance in the Round of 16 at the US Open, where she defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.
Despite Paolini’s strong form this season, which included reaching two Grand Slam finals, Muchova displayed exceptional skill and composure to secure a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the World No. 5. Paolini made a brief comeback in the second set, taking a 3-2 lead after the fifth game, but Muchova rallied to win the last four games, converting crucial break points in the seventh and ninth games to advance to the quarterfinals.
With this win, Muchova has now claimed five victories in her first six Grand Slam matches against top-five opponents, matching Navratilova’s remarkable record. She is also the only WTA player in the last 40 years to achieve such a feat. Muchova’s sole defeat in these encounters came against World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the 2023 Roland Garros.
