The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off another thrilling victory in Week 2, narrowly defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-25 in a dramatic Sunday afternoon showdown. As is often the case between these two AFC powerhouses, the game came down to the wire, with Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker drilling a game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired.
“I can’t say enough about Butker and that kick,” head coach Andy Reid said after the game. “He’s incredibly reliable, and we appreciate the way he handles his job. As great a kicker as he is, he’s an even better person, and we’re grateful for him.”
It wasn’t Kansas City’s cleanest performance, with several self-inflicted mistakes leaving them trailing 25-23 late in the fourth quarter. Three turnovers, including two interceptions by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, dug a hole for the team. But in typical Chiefs fashion, they mounted a crucial final drive to set up Butker’s game-winning field goal. The victory showcased the team’s resilience and experience in close games.
“Until the clock hits zero, there’s always a chance to win,” Mahomes said. “We’ve found different ways to do that over the years. Our mindset is, if we get the ball with a chance to win, we’re going to do it. Today, we got it done.”
Mahomes admitted he felt some nerves not having the outcome directly in his control but had complete faith in Butker to seal the win.
“I get nervous because it’s out of my hands,” Mahomes admitted. “But when all we need is a field goal, I know if we get across the 50, Harrison’s going to knock it through. It’s special to have a kicker like that. I’m really thankful for him.”
For Butker, the pressure-packed moment felt like just another routine kick. He had already made a 19-yard field goal and both extra-point attempts earlier in the game. The veteran kicker credits his practice habits for keeping him calm in high-stakes situations.
“In practice, I put a lot of pressure on myself,” Butker said. “Coach Reid and Coach Toub do a great job of simulating those situations. By the time I’m in the game, it should feel the same as practice. I just focus on making the same kick I’ve done a thousand times.”
While Butker acknowledges the heightened intensity of game-winning kicks, he says it’s all about remaining focused and trusting his preparation.
“When you’re lining up for a game-winner, your focus is at its peak,” Butker said. “It’s hard not to be more locked in, and that’s when you expect to hit your best kick.”
Despite some mistakes, the Chiefs are happy to start the season 2-0, especially after beating two of their toughest AFC rivals. Mahomes emphasized the need to clean up their play but is optimistic as they prepare for a primetime clash against the Atlanta Falcons next week.
“Those were two great teams we just played,” Mahomes said. “We got the wins, but we know we can be better. We’ll fix the mistakes, starting with me. It’ll be a great test next week on Sunday Night Football in Atlanta.”
