Ludvig Åberg: Rising Star Overcomes Challenges to Shine in PGA Tour
Ludvig Åberg, the Swedish golf sensation, has quickly established himself as a player to watch on the global stage. His meteoric rise in professional golf began last year when he claimed victory at the Davis Love III-hosted RSM Classic, just his 11th PGA Tour event as a professional. Critics who might have dismissed his triumph as a stroke of luck were soon silenced when they considered his earlier achievements. Åberg had already made waves on the DP World Tour by winning the Omega European Masters in only his second professional start. Simply put, the 24-year-old golfer has undeniable talent.
However, 2023 was not without its challenges. A knee issue emerged during the spring, hampering Åberg’s performance in the latter half of the season.
“I felt early in the year—this must have been somewhere around April or May—it started to act up a little bit. I didn’t really know what it was,” Åberg revealed.
After consultations with several doctors, he learned he had a meniscus problem.
“I knew that I needed to have surgery at some point, but I also felt like I could last throughout the season,” he explained.
While the injury didn’t significantly impact his swing, it affected his ability to read putts properly, a critical skill in golf.
“I couldn’t read the putts the way I wanted to,” Åberg admitted. “It got swollen, so it shut down the quad, and then my quad ultimately got a little bit weaker.”
Despite these obstacles, Åberg managed to finish the season strong, earning a spot in the Tour Championship—a remarkable achievement for a rookie on the PGA Tour.
Recovery and Reflection
The week after the Tour Championship, Åberg underwent surgery in New York City to address the knee issue. Post-surgery, he stayed in the city for two weeks to begin his rehabilitation. During this time, Åberg took the opportunity to relax and explore with his girlfriend, enjoying some much-needed downtime away from golf.
Shortly after, the couple flew to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where Åberg had purchased his first home in the U.S. The break marked the longest period he had been away from golf since his college days.
“It was quite nice to kind of reflect a little bit,” he said of the time off.
One month after the surgery, Åberg began practicing with short shots, gradually progressing to full swings by late October. Now fully recovered, he’s back to defend his title at the RSM Classic, ready to embark on his second full season on the PGA Tour.
A Year of Achievements
Åberg credits several programs for accelerating his transition to the professional circuit. By winning the RSM Classic, he secured a spot in the Aon Top 10, which gave him entry to prestigious events like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational at Riviera.
“I felt like I took advantage of a lot of programs last year, starting with PGA TOUR U to get my Tour status, and then obviously the Aon Next 10,” Åberg explained.
His ultimate goal was to break into the world’s top 50 rankings quickly, which would guarantee participation in Signature Events and major championships. However, his consistent performance made that goal unnecessary. His victories and strong finishes propelled him to 5th in the world rankings, a remarkable feat for someone so early in their professional career.
Looking Ahead
Now, Åberg is focused on maintaining his momentum and building on his success. He’s confident in his physical health and ready to compete at the highest level.
“My knee is 100 percent. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here,” he assured.
As Ludvig Åberg gears up for his second PGA Tour season, all eyes will be on this rising star as he continues to make his mark on the world of golf.
