Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is gearing up for Sunday’s Super Bowl clash against the San Francisco 49ers, but he’s making it clear he doesn’t want to be compared to NFL legend Tom Brady just yet.
At 28, Mahomes has already achieved remarkable success, aiming to secure his third Vince Lombardi trophy. However, despite the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl victories, Mahomes is hesitant to rank himself alongside Brady, who retired with an impressive seven rings.
Mahomes expressed humility, stating, “I’m not even close to halfway, so I haven’t put a lot of thought into it. Your goal is to be the best player that you can be, and I know I’m blessed to be around a lot of great players.”
Acknowledging the longevity and success of Brady’s career, Mahomes remarked, “In like 15 years, I’ll see if I can get close to seven, but seven seems like a long way away still.” He recognizes the dedication and effort required to achieve such milestones, emphasizing his focus on the present moment and the upcoming challenge against the formidable 49ers.
Reflecting on his approach to the game, Mahomes highlighted the importance of maintaining physical health and a strong work ethic. “I don’t want to play until I am hurting the team,” he said. “So if I can go out there and have some success and still love it every single day, that’s the biggest thing.”
Mahomes also opened up about the lingering disappointment from the Chiefs’ loss to Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 Super Bowl. “I have lost a Super Bowl, and I know how bad that hurts,” he admitted. “I’m almost more addicted to staying away from that feeling than I am about hoisting the trophy.”
As Mahomes prepares to take the field on Sunday, he remains focused on the task at hand, driven by a desire for excellence and a determination to avoid the sting of defeat.
