“Maple Leafs Pass on Corey Perry Amid Lingering Concerns”

Posted on January 25, 2024

In a recent episode of the Kyper & Bourne Show on Sportsnet, Nick Kypreos delved into the circumstances surrounding Corey Perry’s signing with the Edmonton Oilers, shedding light on the reservations various teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, had about acquiring the veteran player.

According to Kypreos, the Maple Leafs were not aligned with the Oilers in their approach to Perry’s signing. While initial discussions did take place between the Leafs and Perry, they didn’t progress far due to Toronto’s heightened concerns about the incident in Chicago that led to Perry’s contract termination with the Blackhawks. The Leafs, like some other teams, chose to step back early in the process, expressing limited enthusiasm.

Kypreos pointed out that the lack of detail provided about the Chicago incident became a stumbling block for potential suitors, making the decision-making process challenging for teams, including Toronto. The worry lingered that issues surrounding Perry might resurface later in the season.

Contrary to other reports, Kypreos contended that Perry had fewer teams to choose from than initially suggested. Many teams reportedly backed out, leaving the Oilers among the few showing immediate interest. This could explain the cost-effective nature of Perry’s deal with Edmonton.

The Oilers’ calculated risk in signing Perry was emphasized by Kypreos, drawing parallels with the team’s previous gamble on Evander Kane. The Oilers, known for offering second chances, secured Perry on a deal that could potentially be a significant win for them.

Frank Seravalli added weight to Kypreos’ narrative, indicating that teams like the LA Kings, New York Rangers, and Tampa Bay Lightning engaged in discussions with Perry but were hesitant to fully commit. Toronto, despite initial conversations, chose to walk away early due to lingering uncertainties.

As the season progresses, the decision by Toronto to step back from pursuing Perry may be scrutinized, and only time will reveal the outcome of this strategic move.
