Hideki Matsuyama withdrew from the BMW Championship before the start of the second round on Friday due to a lower back injury. Matsuyama has been contending with back and neck injuries over the past few years.
The 2021 Masters champion missed a short birdie putt on the 18th hole and finished with a 5-under 67 during Thursday’s first round at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. He was just one stroke behind leader Keegan Bradley after the first round.
Matsuyama, 32, secured his 10th PGA Tour title by winning last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, the opener of the playoffs. This victory propelled him to third place in the FedEx Cup standings.
Representing Japan, Matsuyama also earned a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
