Scottie Scheffler clinched another title this past weekend, further solidifying his impressive dominance in 2024 and boosting his earnings by £2.85 million. The 28-year-old American emerged victorious at the Travelers Championship on Sunday, June 23, in a nail-biting finish against Tom Kim, enhancing his stellar season.
This triumph marks Scheffler’s sixth PGA Tour win in just 10 starts this year, a remarkable feat that left fellow golfer Matthew Fitzpatrick questioning his own pursuit of the sport. Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a tongue-in-cheek comment on Scheffler’s prowess. Reacting to a post highlighting Scheffler’s success since switching to a mallet putter, Fitzpatrick quipped, “Why do we even bother,” accompanied by a laughing and crying emoji.
Fans were quick to join in the light-hearted banter. One user responded, “Decent prize money for 2nd I suppose…” while another added, “As Kisner says, there’s a lot of dough for a top 20.”
Scheffler’s 2024 achievements include victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, The Masters, RBC Heritage, and the Memorial, in addition to his latest win. This string of successes has not only cemented his position as the current Masters champion but also extended his lead as world number one and at the top of the FedExCup standings. His six wins before July make him the first player to achieve this since Arnold Palmer in 1962.
Reflecting on his latest victory, Scheffler paid tribute to his competitor, Kim, stating, “It has been a great season. I’ve been fortunate to come away with some wins, and it has been a lot of fun. Tom played his heart out today. He’s a great player, great champion, and it was fun battling with him today.”
Tom Kim, a 22-year-old South Korean golfer, has been recognized as one of the most promising talents on the Tour, especially after his runner-up performance at The Open Championship last year. Despite finishing second in Connecticut, he earned a substantial £1.7 million in prize money.
As Scheffler heads into The Open Championship at Troon next month, his red-hot form makes him the bookmakers’ favorite to win. With Rory McIlroy also expected to be a strong contender, the upcoming tournament promises to be an exciting event in the golf calendar.
