Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced on Saturday that no body camera footage exists of the arrest of professional golfer Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler was detained early Friday at the PGA Championship, facing charges of assaulting a police officer, an offense that could lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
The arresting officer, Bryan Gillis, did not have his body camera activated during the incident. “The officer did not have his bodycam turned on during the incident. We will release the footage that we have,” Mayor Greenberg stated, as reported by WDRB in Louisville. He further added, “To my knowledge, we have not discovered any video of the initial contact between Officer Gillis and Mr. Scheffler.”
Despite the arrest, Scheffler was released in time to arrive at the golf course just 57 minutes before his scheduled tee time on Friday. Remarkably, Scheffler proceeded to shoot a 5-under 66, which he described as “one of the best rounds of his career,” despite what he referred to as a “big misunderstanding.”
According to the police report, Scheffler allegedly “refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground.” However, Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, vehemently denied these allegations, calling them “false.”
Scheffler is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Following his court appearance, he will participate in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, near his hometown of Dallas, Texas. The PGA Tour has confirmed Scheffler’s inclusion in the tournament field.
The incident and the lack of body camera footage have raised questions about police protocols and the circumstances leading to Scheffler’s arrest. The case continues to unfold as the golfing world watches closely.
