Rory McIlroy’s potential move to LIV Golf, a breakaway tour backed by Saudi Arabia, has stirred speculation and could potentially strain his relationship with golfing legend Tiger Woods.
Initially staunchly opposed to the idea, McIlroy’s stance seems to have softened in recent months. Despite previously stating he’d “rather retire” than join LIV Golf, his attitude has shifted, especially following moves by fellow golfers Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton.
In a recent interview on Gary Neville’s Overlap podcast, McIlroy admitted to never receiving an official offer from LIV Golf. Woods, a vocal opponent of the venture, reportedly rejected a substantial offer from the league.
Former manager Chubby Chandler hinted at a possible switch for McIlroy, estimating the likelihood at 10 percent. McIlroy, when pressed about this during a press conference, remained non-committal, stating, “Somewhere in the middle maybe. Who knows?”
Despite the speculation, McIlroy has begun his 2024 season on a positive note, with strong performances in Dubai. However, his return to the PGA Tour has been mixed, with middling finishes at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational.
Reflecting on his performances, McIlroy cited weather disruptions and minor errors but expressed confidence in his overall game. He emphasized the importance of wins, season-long titles, and major championships in defining success and acknowledged that his legacy would ultimately be judged on major victories.
McIlroy remains focused on achieving victory, recognizing its significance in shaping his career. While the prospect of joining LIV Golf looms, McIlroy’s immediate priority lies in performing well on the PGA Tour and pursuing further success in the sport.
