Reflecting on his experience, Shipley expressed, “I think I have to win one of these things to kind of top this week. Definitely been a dream week.” Prior to the tournament, Shipley was relatively unknown outside golf enthusiast circles, but his performance quickly made him one of the week’s feel-good stories.
Shipley’s newfound fame was further amplified by a meme that circulated on Twitter following his appearance in Butler Cabin. Caught glancing at a teleprompter off-screen while seated next to Scheffler, Rahm, and Ridley, Shipley unintentionally became the subject of internet humor.
Recounting the moment, Shipley shared, “My brother comes up and he’s like laughing at me… I saw the picture and was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m such an idiot.’” He explained his nervousness during the broadcast, stating, “I was so nervous, the last thing I wanted to do was swear on national TV or say something stupid… I was trying to look at the teleprompter to know what was going on so I knew my cues. Dumbass.”
Despite the initial embarrassment, Shipley took the teasing from his family in stride, jokingly recalling, “We go back to our party house, I’ve had a few icy lights, and all of a sudden my family is like ‘have you seen these memes of you’ and start absolutely roasting me for the next three hours.”
