**Nelly Korda’s Quadruple-Bogey Derails Her Round at Olympic Golf Competition**
In the second round of the Olympic Golf Competition in Paris, Team USA’s Nelly Korda, the defending champion, suffered a significant setback after a disastrous quadruple-bogey on the par-3 16th hole. Korda, 26, had been cruising through the round and seemed well-positioned to defend her gold medal before the misstep on the 16th.
After an even-par 72 in the first round, Korda found her rhythm in the second, making a strong push on the front nine with four birdies. She continued her momentum with additional birdies on the 11th and 15th holes, moving into a tie for second place, just behind the 36-hole leader, Morgane Metraux of Switzerland.
However, Korda’s round took a dramatic turn at the par-3 16th. Her tee shot fell short, landing in the lake. Her third shot ended up in the greenside bunker, where the ball plugged in the sand. A difficult splash out left her with a long putt, which led to three more strokes and a quadruple-bogey seven. This dropped her from 6-under par to 2-under par for the tournament.
Korda’s struggles continued with a bogey on the par-4 17th. Yet, she showed resilience by making her seventh birdie of the day on the par-5 18th, finishing the round with a 2-under 70. This left her at 2-under par overall, tied for 12th place with two rounds remaining. Although Korda is still in the hunt to defend her title, she now faces a six-shot deficit as she heads into the weekend.
Morgane Metraux leads the tournament at 8-under par, holding a one-shot lead over China’s Ruoning Yin. Former World No.1 Lydia Ko from New Zealand is in solo third place at 5-under par.
France’s Celine Boutier, who was in contention for much of the day, also had a tough back nine. After reaching 8-under par for the tournament, she endured a rough stretch with a double bogey on both the 13th and 14th holes, followed by another on the 15th. Boutier parred the final three holes, finishing the day at 3-under par, five shots off the lead.
For Team GB, Charley Hull had a better second round after a disappointing first-round 81. Despite a strong start, she stumbled with a bogey on the 16th, a par on the 17th, and a double bogey on the 18th. Hull finished the day with a 1-under 71, putting her at 8-over par for the tournament, 16 shots behind the leader. Hull cited a shoulder injury from a recent fall and the lack of cigarettes on the course as factors affecting her performance.
Georgia Hall, Team GB’s other participant, also struggled, finishing at 4-over par with consecutive rounds of 74.
As the competition heads into the weekend, Korda and other top contenders will need to step up their game to challenge Metraux and keep their hopes of Olympic gold alive.
