Philadelphia Eagles chief security officer Dom DiSandro may face disciplinary action from the NFL following his involvement in a sideline scuffle with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. DiSandro, initially a viral sensation, was ejected from the game, but the NFL is now investigating the incident and may take further action.
The league’s scrutiny comes in light of a memo sent to all 32 teams in October, outlining potential consequences for engaging in fights, including disqualification, fines, and/or suspension without pay. The memo emphasizes the importance of sportsmanship and respect in NFL football, stating that fighting poses risks of unnecessary injury to players, coaches, officials, and other personnel.
DiSandro and Greenlaw had reportedly exchanged words before the game, escalating into the scuffle. Despite DiSandro explaining his part in the incident to 49ers general manager John Lynch after the game, the NFL is closely monitoring the situation. The league’s commitment to enforcing anti-fighting policies is evident, with both Football Operations staff and Game Officials keeping a close eye on team activities.
While Lynch handled the aftermath diplomatically, expressing that the situation concluded on a positive note, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan voiced frustration. Shanahan criticized the involvement of someone not affiliated with the coaching staff, emphasizing his disbelief that an outsider could taunt players and physically engage with them during a game.
The incident raises questions about maintaining decorum in the NFL and the potential consequences for both players and non-players who participate in on-field altercations. As the league investigates, DiSandro’s role in the scuffle could lead to significant accountability measures in line with the NFL’s commitment to upholding the values of sportsmanship and respect.
