Sir Nick Faldo, a six-time major champion, has revealed some surprising facts about the US Masters and its famous green jacket. Faldo, who won the Masters three times, has shared that the jackets don’t actually leave the Augusta National clubhouse, except for the one worn by the current champion.
Each year, Faldo attends the Masters’ champion’s dinner, where the reigning champion picks the menu. He could also play in the tournament, but he hasn’t since missing the cut in 2006. Contrary to what many fans think, Faldo doesn’t have three green jackets at home. All jackets, except the winner’s, stay at the clubhouse.
During an appearance on the Rick Shiels Golf Show, Faldo explained that when he returns to Augusta, he finds one jacket in his locker. This jacket is one that fits him, but it’s not just his; it’s shared. He clarified that even legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods don’t have multiple jackets—just one that fits.
Faldo also revealed that if he wants to play at Augusta outside of the tournament, he must play with a member, just like any regular person. This surprised many, as they expected past champions to have more freedom at the course.
The tradition of the green jacket began in 1937 when Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided Augusta National members should wear bright blazers so that patrons could easily recognize them for assistance.
Despite these revelations, Faldo’s legacy remains intact. He won the Masters in 1989, 1990, and most famously in 1996, adding to his illustrious career that includes three Open Championships.
