Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has expressed his commitment to taking on a more substantial role in aiding the struggling defense, aiming to revive the team’s dwindling playoff hopes. Despite a 34-20 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LaFleur has decided not to relieve defensive coordinator Joe Barry of his duties, emphasizing that addressing communication issues on defense is the immediate priority.
LaFleur acknowledged the disappointment stemming from poor communication that allowed Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield to exploit defensive vulnerabilities. The coach took responsibility, stating, “It always starts with us. It starts with myself and goes to all our assistant coaches. So obviously, the coaching wasn’t up to the standard, and our performance on the field definitely showed that as well.”
Despite the defensive struggles, LaFleur defended keeping Barry in his role, citing previous successful executions of defensive strategies. He admitted there were play calls he would like to have back, acknowledging room for improvement in critical situations, such as third-and-short plays and red zone scenarios.
The recent back-to-back losses against the New York Giants and Buccaneers have put the Packers in a challenging position, needing to win their remaining three games and rely on external results to secure a playoff spot. The team, previously riding high after victories against Detroit and Kansas City, is now facing frustration and a realization of the high standards they are held to.
Quarterback Jordan Love emerged as a bright spot, showcasing potential as a long-term solution with 11 touchdown passes and only one interception in his last five games. However, the glaring issue lies in the struggling defense, which allowed the Buccaneers to score touchdowns on three consecutive second-half possessions.
In terms of injuries, wide receiver Jayden Reed hurt his toe late in the game, while key players like Jaire Alexander, Christian Watson, and Darnell Savage remained sidelined.
Looking ahead, the Packers face crucial matchups against Carolina and Minnesota, aiming to bounce back from their recent setbacks and keep their playoff aspirations alive. The team recognizes the urgency of addressing defensive issues and learning from recent mistakes to navigate a challenging end to the season.
