The Green Bay Packers made a surprising move this off-season by parting ways with longtime kicker Mason Crosby, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. This decision aligned with the team’s unofficial “youth movement,” evident in their drafting of kicker Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
After patiently awaiting an opportunity, Crosby’s chance finally arrived. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Los Angeles Rams are signing the 39-year-old veteran to their practice squad, intending to elevate him to the active roster soon. This marks Crosby’s first venture with a team other than the Packers after a remarkable 16-year stint in Green Bay.
During his illustrious career with the Packers from 2007 to 2022, Crosby amassed 1,918 points, setting a franchise record. He also holds the record for the most extra points with 733. Despite his contract expiring last season, Crosby remained determined for an NFL comeback throughout the current season.
The Rams’ decision to bring in Crosby suggests a shift from their current kicker, Lucas Havrisik, who faced challenges in the previous week, missing a field goal and an extra point in the win over the Browns. Havrisik’s debut season showcased a 7-for-10 record on field goals and a 10-for-11 record on PATs, prompting the Rams to explore alternatives.
With the Rams and Packers both vying for playoff spots in the NFC, Crosby’s return adds an intriguing element to the postseason race. As the veteran kicker embraces this new opportunity, his impact on the Rams’ special teams dynamics could play a crucial role in the upcoming games.
