Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst has revealed plans to engage in discussions for a long-term contract extension with quarterback Jordan Love within the next couple of months. Gutekunst expressed excitement about building around Love, citing his strong performance in the latter part of the season, particularly during the Super Wild Card Weekend upset against the Dallas Cowboys.
After a challenging start to the season, Love’s second-half resurgence led the Packers to the playoffs, impressing many, including Gutekunst. Following the trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in 2023, Love, previously on the bench for three seasons, became the presumptive starter and signed a short contract extension, serving as a prove-it deal. The agreement allowed the Packers flexibility while giving Love the opportunity for a raise and a long-term deal if he proved to be the team’s future quarterback.
Gutekunst emphasized the importance of stability and expressed confidence in initiating contract talks with Love during the offseason, highlighting the positive relationship with Love and his representation.
In the regular season, Love posted impressive numbers, throwing for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while also contributing with 247 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Packers secured a 9-8 record in the regular season under his leadership.
During the playoffs, Love continued to shine, throwing for 466 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in two games. Gutekunst acknowledged Love’s growth, indicating the team’s intention to pursue a contract extension.
Jordan Love, a Bakersfield, California native, played at Utah State University from 2016-19, accumulating 8,600 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions with a 61 percent completion rate. The Packers traded up to select Love with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Love’s early NFL career saw limited action in his second and third seasons, primarily serving as a backup to Aaron Rodgers. Following the 2022 season and Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets, Love assumed the role of Green Bay’s starting quarterback in 2023.
In his first three seasons, Love recorded 606 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions in 10 games played, showcasing his progression as he took on the QB1 role in 2023.
