PGA CHAMPIONSHIP: Scheffler Ready

Posted on May 15, 2024

Scottie Scheffler is gearing up for an intense showdown with Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka at the upcoming PGA Championship at Valhalla this week. Despite his hiatus from competitive play to welcome his first child with spouse Meridith, Scheffler is brimming with confidence, stating that he feels “extremely prepared” for the challenge ahead.

The world number one golfer’s last competitive outing was his victory at the RBC Heritage over three weeks ago. His focus on family during this time was rewarded with the joyous arrival of his newborn son.

In contrast, both McIlroy and defending Wannamaker Trophy holder Koepka have been in stellar form. McIlroy enters the championship on the back of consecutive PGA Tour wins, including the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow. Koepka, a five-time major champion, showcased his prowess with a commanding win at the LIV Golf Singapore event earlier this month, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.

However, Scheffler isn’t letting his rivals’ recent successes intimidate him. Emphasizing the importance of mental preparation and staying present on the course, he asserts that underestimating his current level of play would be a mistake.

Speaking to Golf Channel, Scheffler expressed his excitement for the upcoming competition: “I want to be as prepared as possible going into an event and standing here today, I feel like I’m extremely prepared and I really feel like my game is in a good spot.”

Despite his hiatus, Scheffler has had an impressive run of results in recent tournaments, with four wins in his last five starts and a second-place tie in another event. Taking time off for the birth of his child was a decision he embraced wholeheartedly.

Reflecting on the experience, Scheffler shared the joy of becoming a father: “I had high expectations of what it would feel like and I think those were far exceeded. It’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

Acknowledging the challenge of leaving his family behind to compete, Scheffler expressed gratitude for the time spent with his newborn son and wife. Despite the unconventional preparation, he remains focused on giving his best performance at the championship.

As the tournament approaches, Scheffler plans to immerse himself fully in his preparations while cherishing every moment with his family. With a combination of confidence, determination, and newfound fatherhood, he is poised to make his mark at the PGA Championship.
