The PGA Tour has finally acknowledged what fans and analysts have known for years: Tiger Woods isn’t just an influential figure in golf—he *is* the sport’s heartbeat. This realization has led to a landmark decision by the PGA Tour to grant Woods a lifetime exemption into its eight signature events annually.
Unlike the lifetime membership Woods already holds for the PGA Tour, the criteria for the signature events, which feature a hefty $20 million purse, are different and more stringent. Until now, Woods has only been able to participate in these events through sponsor exemptions.
The key question now is how frequently Woods will take advantage of this exemption to compete in these prestigious tournaments. In 2024, Woods has played in only four tournaments, three of which were majors, with the Genesis Invitational being the only signature event he entered. Given his recent history of injuries and the lingering effects of his car accident, it’s uncertain how many of these events he will be able to participate in. Nevertheless, his presence in any tournament would undeniably boost its appeal.
The eight signature events include The Sentry, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, the Wells Fargo Championship, the Memorial Tournament, and the Travelers Championship. Whether Woods competes in each event or not, his eligibility alone promises to elevate the excitement and prestige surrounding these tournaments.
