PGA Tour star Wyndham Clark has found himself in the midst of controversy following allegations of cheating at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month. However, Clark has vehemently defended himself, asserting that he had no malicious intentions despite acknowledging that the situation “didn’t look great.”
Clark, who has been enjoying a stellar season on the PGA Tour with notable victories and strong finishes, faced accusations of cheating during his third round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The controversy erupted when television footage seemed to show him altering his lie while playing from the rough at Bay Hill.
The U.S. Open champion quickly became the subject of scrutiny, with many alleging that he intentionally improved his position. However, Clark has refuted these claims, stating that he was unaware of any wrongdoing until brought to his attention in the scoring tent.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Clark expressed his disappointment over the situation, emphasizing that he had no intentions of cheating. Upon reviewing the footage, he admitted that it didn’t present him in a favorable light, acknowledging, “Oh man, that doesn’t look great.”
Despite the optics, Clark stood by his actions, citing Rule 8.1b (4), which permits players to lightly ground the club in certain circumstances. He defended his actions, explaining that he was within the rules to assess his lie, and hoped that the controversy would blow over in due time.
“In my defense, you’re allowed to put your club down and see your lie,” he stated, maintaining his innocence. “It is what it is, and hopefully in a few weeks it passes by. But I’ve never tried to cheat in the game of golf, and hopefully people don’t think of me that way. I just think the camera was zoomed in and made it look worse than it really was.”
Despite the backlash, Clark remains focused on his game and hopes to move past the incident, emphasizing his commitment to fair play in golf.
