Phil Mickelson Drops Emphatic 5-Word Reaction to Keegan Bradley’s Win

Posted on June 23, 2025

It’s rare to see Phil Mickelson tip his cap to a PGA Tour player these days—especially since his switch to LIV Golf. But Keegan Bradley’s dramatic victory at the Travelers Championship earned just that: a rare and emphatic nod from “Lefty.”

The last time Mickelson showed such public respect was for World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, after he won the PGA Tour Championship—though that may have been partly to walk back his earlier claim that Scheffler wouldn’t win in 2025.

This time, however, Mickelson wasted no time. Hours after Bradley sank a clutch 6-foot birdie on the 72nd hole to secure a one-shot win over Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley, Mickelson posted on X:
“Keegan Bradley is THE MAN!!”

And it wasn’t just another trophy for the 39-year-old—it was a statement. Entering the final round three shots behind Fleetwood, Bradley rallied with birdies at 15 and 18, carding a 2-under 68 to finish 15-under for the tournament. On the final hole, his approach shot nestled just inside six feet. When Fleetwood three-putted from 50 feet, Bradley calmly rolled in the winning putt.

It marked the eighth PGA Tour title of his career—and perhaps the most meaningful.

Less than a year ago, Bradley received the call naming him captain of Team USA for the 2025 Ryder Cup. But it came with a twist.

> “When they called and told me I was going to be Ryder Cup captain, the first thing they said was, ‘We want you to be the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1962,’” Bradley said after the win. “At first, I didn’t understand what they meant. But they had already started laying the groundwork for that possibility.”

Sunday’s win silenced many critics—among them, Rory McIlroy’s putting coach Brad Faxon, former captain Jim Furyk, and fellow pro Webb Simpson—all of whom had questioned whether Bradley could balance the dual responsibilities of playing and leading the team.

Huge leap in Ryder Cup standings

Bradley’s $3.6 million win also brought a huge jump in the Ryder Cup points rankings. Before Sunday, he sat in 17th place. Now, he’s up to No. 9 with 7,845.22 points.

Currently, Scottie Scheffler is the only American to have officially qualified for Team USA. Behind him is Xander Schauffele in second, followed by J.J. Spaun in third—thanks to his breakthrough at the U.S. Open.

Russell Henley’s runner-up finish in Connecticut pushed him from outside the top six all the way to fourth. Bryson DeChambeau, who was fourth last week, slid to fifth despite a solid string of major finishes.

Collin Morikawa also took a hit, losing his sixth-place spot to Justin Thomas, who now rounds out the group of automatic qualifiers with 9,997.69 points.

Bradley, with two wins in the past ten months and five top-10 finishes this season, is gaining momentum fast. But to crack the top six and guarantee his place as a playing captain, he’ll likely need another win or at least a top-three finish.

> “This definitely opens the door to playing,” he said after his win. “I never would’ve considered it seriously if I hadn’t won. But now I need to take a hard look at what’s best for the team.”

The top six in the Ryder Cup rankings earn automatic spots. The remaining six players? Those are up to Captain Keegan Bradley—who may just have to choose himself.
