Red Bull Racing attributes its Formula 1 dominance in the 2023 season to a strategic weight reduction in its RB19 car. The team, based in Milton Keynes, secured both the constructors’ championship and the drivers’ title with Max Verstappen, winning 21 out of 22 races. Team boss Christian Horner revealed that a significant aspect of the RB19’s success was a 20kg weight purge, addressing the excess bulk that had plagued the RB18 in 2022.
Horner clarified that a substantial portion of the RB19 comprised components carried over from the previous model. The weight reduction became a pivotal improvement, with the team managing to shed 20 kilograms, rectifying issues stemming from the RB18’s weightiness in the previous year. This adjustment, coupled with refining imperfections, contributed to the car’s outstanding performance.
Highlighting the late adoption of new regulations in 2021 due to the previous year’s championship battle, Horner emphasized the need to trim down the RB19. The weight reduction, a culmination of marginal gains across various components, was identified as the fundamental difference between the 2022 and 2023 cars.
When questioned about the significance of the weight reduction, Horner noted that improvements were widespread, affecting all areas of the car. He emphasized that the team was carrying a deficit in weight for a substantial portion of the 2022 season, indicating the impact of the RB19’s transformation.
Despite the RB19’s remarkable success, it fell short of a clean sweep of race wins, facing defeat in Singapore. Reflecting on the setback, Horner mentioned that the team had been misled in Friday practice by simulation predictions. He acknowledged the challenges of winning in Formula 1, emphasizing the importance of precision in setup. Horner suggested that a different approach to setup could have placed them in a more competitive position in the Singapore race, underlining the fine margins in the sport.
