The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason with a clear motivation to assert their dominance and reiterate their standing as one of the major players in Major League Baseball.
As the offseason unfolds, the Red Sox have remained relatively inactive, with numerous impact players still available on the market. Despite the disappointment among fans for missing out on notable stars like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the latest development – Boston stepping back from the bidding for a specific player – may not warrant the same level of dismay.
According to reports from FanSided’s Robert Murray on Tuesday, free-agent catcher Martín Maldonado is nearing an agreement with the Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox had engaged in discussions with Maldonado’s representation during the uneventful Winter Meetings earlier in the month, joining a crowded field of potential suitors.
However, in a strategic move, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has seemingly shifted course since those initial meetings. Breslow successfully secured another Gold Glove-winning catcher, Roberto Pérez, on a minor-league deal. This move addresses Boston’s need for additional catching depth behind Connor Wong and Reese McGuire. Notably, Pérez’s flexibility to start the season off the 40-man roster played a pivotal role in this decision.
In contrast, pursuing Maldonado would have required the Red Sox to allocate a third 40-man roster spot for the catching position. This consideration likely influenced the team’s decision-making process.
While the Red Sox faced setbacks in bidding wars for Yamamoto and right-hander Seth Lugo, who ultimately signed with the Kansas City Royals, it appears they strategically withdrew from the race for Maldonado after finding a more suitable match with Pérez. This move not only addresses their catching needs but also optimizes their roster management as they prepare for the upcoming season.
