The Red Sox have been relatively quiet in the free-agent market, with their notable signing being a $1MM deal for depth arm Cooper Criswell. Despite initial links to high-profile players like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who eventually joined the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston is exploring other options.
Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell have been mentioned, but the team seems more focused on the next tier of free agents. Shota Imanaga and Lucas Giolito are on their radar for the rotation, with outfielder Teoscar Hernández also drawing interest. Imanaga, the #2 pitcher from Japan this offseason, posted a 2.80 ERA with an impressive 174 strikeouts in 148 innings in NPB.
While not as high-profile as Yamamoto, Imanaga is considered a solid mid-rotation starter. Available through the posting system since November 27, he is expected to sign with an MLB team by January 11. The Red Sox, along with the Giants, Cubs, and Yankees, are reportedly in the mix for Imanaga.
In contrast to a potential multi-year commitment for Imanaga, there’s also speculation about a shorter reunion with James Paxton. The 35-year-old left-hander, who pitched to a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts last season, has been in contact with the Red Sox throughout the offseason. Despite no imminent deal, Paxton’s ability to generate strikeouts with a mid-90s fastball is still appealing, though his recent injury history, including Tommy John surgery and lat strains, raises some concerns.
As the offseason progresses, Boston is navigating the market, considering both international talent like Imanaga and familiar faces like Paxton to bolster their roster.
