Less than a week after the tragic circumstances that led to a loss of life and the bizarre situation that resulted in the arrest of World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, more details about the events during the early morning hours of Friday at this year’s PGA Championship are emerging.
Fans were left stunned when news broke that the reigning Masters champion had been arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club before his second round at the major championship. Scheffler, who was later released on bail, miraculously made his second-round tee time, but not before being charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from officers directing traffic.
According to the initial police report by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), Scheffler allegedly ignored the directions of Detective Bryan Gillis, who was reportedly dragged by Scheffler’s vehicle, resulting in injuries and damages to his uniform. Scheffler described the incident as a misunderstanding. His arraignment, initially scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed to June 3.
On Thursday, Louisville Police released the first footage of the incident, which occurred last Friday. This release followed disciplinary action against Detective Gillis for failing to have his body-worn camera activated during his encounter with the two-time major champion.
The footage, captured from two angles—one from a police car dash cam and the other from a fixed pole camera across the street from Valhalla Golf Club—does not appear to support Detective Gillis’s account. Instead, the videos show a different sequence of events. The release of this footage quickly spread on social media, sparking outrage among fans and players.
Social media reactions were swift and critical:
– The Degenerates (@degen_betting) tweeted: “If this is the true footage of what got Scheffler arrested, then the Louisville PD needs to be investigated. You can see Scottie turn his car, the cop runs over and smacks his windshield. Scottie stops and is in handcuffs moments right away. Madness.”
– Barrett Sallee (@BarrettSallee) added: “Well, Scottie Scheffler is gonna win a few lawsuits against the Louisville PD.”
– James Rhodes (@JamesRhodes50) remarked: “Louisville PD posting this video thinking it justifies a felony charge.”
The criticism was further echoed by Paul Mitchell (@PaulMitchell_AB), who stated: “As predicted, the cop’s story was fabricated. He was not ‘dragged’ by the vehicle and this video proves it. Scottie Scheffler should sue the Louisville PD for false arrest. They also harmed him financially due to this event.”
Nick Coffey (@TheCardConnect) also voiced his disbelief: “This is gross. If this is the incident, the LMPD report is just a blatant lie. Scheffler stopped as soon as the officer approached his window. He did not drag the officer 10-15 yards. Just a flat-out lie. Embarrassing.”
Professional golfer Byeong Hun An (@ByeongHunAn) humorously commented: “‘Drag’ seems like a very, very strong word…if that’s a drag, the garden lizards are dragons.”
The released footage and subsequent reactions raise serious questions about the accuracy of Detective Gillis’s report and the legitimacy of the charges against Scheffler. The incident, now under intense public scrutiny, casts doubt on the actions of the Louisville Metro Police Department and the motivations behind the arrest. The unfolding situation has not only impacted Scheffler’s professional life but also sparked widespread criticism and calls for accountability within the police department.
