Robert MacIntyre won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday, securing his first PGA Tour victory. This triumph earned him spots in the Memorial Tournament, the Travelers Championship, and the U.S. Open. However, MacIntyre, a 27-year-old Scottish golfer, will not be competing in Dublin, Ohio. Instead, he has decided to return home to Scotland to spend time with his family.
This decision appears to have been made at the last minute, as MacIntyre had not yet consulted his family or team. “Yeah, well, I’ve not even spoken to my mom, my family, my team, my managers,” MacIntyre said Sunday night. “I’m guessing I’m going to have to (smiling). I would love to go home for a party, but I think we’ll probably play next week.”
However, just over 12 hours later, MacIntyre made his decision. The PGA Tour Communications announced on Monday that he would not be playing at The Memorial Tournament. As a result, Davis Thompson will take his place in the field.
Many golfers would seize the opportunity to play at The Memorial, especially since it has become a Signature Event. However, MacIntyre opted for a trip back to Scotland. This choice is not surprising, given that he has expressed homesickness multiple times. His victory allows him to take a break.
“This is my fifth event in a row as well. I was planning to do U.S. Open qualifier tomorrow, 36 holes with my dad on the bag,” he said after his win. “Thankfully, that’s off the cards.”
MacIntyre’s next likely event will be the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club from June 13-16.
