Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods skip pre-Masters tradition on eve of first major of the year

Posted on April 10, 2024

Two of golf’s most prominent figures, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, have chosen to forgo the traditional par-three contest at Augusta National on the eve of the Masters tournament, a departure from the usual pre-tournament ritual.

The par-three event, a cherished tradition at Augusta National since its inception in 1960, serves as a relaxed precursor to the intensity of the main tournament, offering players a chance to unwind and enjoy a leisurely nine holes before the competition begins in earnest.

However, this year, the absence of McIlroy and Woods from the Wednesday tee sheet marks a notable shift in the event’s dynamic. While the par-three contest will proceed as scheduled, it will do so without the presence of two of the sport’s biggest names.

For Woods, his decision to skip the event likely stems from ongoing concerns about his physical condition. Battling persistent leg and ankle injuries, the five-time Masters champion has seen his PGA Tour appearances become increasingly sporadic in recent years. Forced to withdraw from last year’s tournament due to injury, Woods remains determined to compete, though his fitness remains a constant challenge.

In an update on his condition, Woods remarked that while his ankle no longer causes him pain, other parts of his body now bear the brunt of the strain, including his back and knee. Despite these challenges, Woods remains committed to his pursuit of golfing excellence, acknowledging the fluctuations in his physical well-being from day to day.

Meanwhile, McIlroy’s decision to forego the par-three contest suggests a focused dedication to the task at hand – namely, securing his first green jacket and completing the elusive career Grand Slam. With a decade-long wait for this achievement, the Northern Irishman undoubtedly approaches this year’s Masters with heightened determination and ambition.

As the golfing world eagerly anticipates the start of the tournament, the absence of McIlroy and Woods from the traditional pre-Masters festivities underscores the unique challenges and aspirations that define each player’s journey toward Augusta glory.
