Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Travelers Championship Following US Open Setback
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from this week’s Travelers Championship in Connecticut, citing Sunday’s heartbreaking collapse at the US Open as “probably the toughest” day of his career.
McIlroy, who held a two-shot lead, faltered in the final stretch, recording three bogeys in the last five holes. He missed two crucial putts from a combined distance of seven feet, ultimately leaving the course just minutes after Bryson DeChambeau clinched the victory.
In a heartfelt statement posted on social media on Monday, McIlroy reflected on the challenging experience. “Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I’ve had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer,” he wrote.
McIlroy extended his congratulations to DeChambeau, acknowledging his rival’s accomplishment. “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that.”
Reflecting on his performance throughout the tournament, McIlroy expressed regret over the missed opportunities that cost him the title, particularly the two missed putts on the 16th and 18th holes during the final round. Despite the disappointment, he emphasized his intention to focus on the positives, which he believes outweigh the negatives.
“As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have,” McIlroy noted. He described his career in one word: resilient. “I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again.”
McIlroy announced that he would be taking a few weeks away from competitive golf to process the events of the US Open and to rebuild his focus. His next scheduled appearance will be at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he plans to defend his title starting July 11, followed by The Open at Royal Troon.
With nearly a month until his next competition, McIlroy will use this time to regroup and prepare for the upcoming challenges, determined to bounce back stronger from his recent setback.
