Rory McIlroy, currently ranked as the world No. 3, plans to significantly reduce his playing schedule for next season after acknowledging that he “hit a wall” this year. By the time his 2024 season concludes in November, McIlroy will have competed in 27 events, prompting him to reconsider how he approaches his calendar moving forward.
After going 10 years without securing a major title, McIlroy has decided to scale back his tournament commitments in 2025, aiming to participate in only 18 to 20 events—a substantial decrease from his current load. This decision comes in part due to the added pressure from his active involvement in the ongoing merger discussions in professional golf.
“My season isn’t over yet; I still have five more events to play,” McIlroy said after finishing ninth in the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship in Atlanta. “The tournaments came thick and fast this year, and the Olympics made the schedule even more compressed. It’s been a long season, and I’m realizing I need to build in more breaks next year and beyond. I felt like I hit a wall after the U.S. Open, and I still feel some of that fatigue.”
Reflecting on his earlier years, McIlroy noted, “I used to play around 22 events a year, but that was when I was younger and had fewer responsibilities. Now, I’m aiming to cut it back to 18 or 20 events annually.”
McIlroy is set to return to Europe shortly, where he will compete in the Irish Open at Royal County Down next week, followed by the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and the Alfred Dunhill Links at St Andrews in October.
