Golfer Rory McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, have shown that their marriage remains strong, despite recent challenges. Over the weekend, McIlroy was seen sharing a tender moment with Erica after his loss at the BMW Championship in Wentworth.
The heartwarming scene featured Erica and their daughter, Poppy, providing comfort to the World No. 3 golfer. DP World Tour shared the touching moment on X (formerly Twitter), captioning the post: “Losing is hard. Family makes it easier.”
In the video, McIlroy, 35, held his daughter closely as a reporter asked, “Have you had a good day?” Moments later, Erica joined the frame, and Rory embraced her in a warm show of affection.
This public display of unity comes just weeks after Rory reversed his decision to divorce Erica. In June, his attorney, Thomas Sasser, filed a Notice of Voluntary Dismissal at the Palm Beach County Courthouse, formally withdrawing the divorce proceedings.
This unexpected development occurred just weeks after Erica was served with divorce papers at their marital home in Jupiter, Florida. The papers, filed on May 13, informed Erica that Rory was seeking to end their marriage. She was given 20 days to respond or risk the court granting the divorce by default. However, by the June 2 deadline, Erica had not filed any response or appointed legal representation.
The official notice read: “Petitioner Rory D. McIlroy, by and through the undersigned counsel, hereby voluntarily dismisses, without prejudice, the above-styled matter.” Once a court receives such a notice, the divorce case is considered closed.
Ahead of the U.S. Open, Rory addressed rumors regarding his marriage in a statement to *The Guardian*. “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” he said. “Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is together as a family. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and are looking forward to a new beginning.”
The couple first met during the 2012 Ryder Cup and began dating two years later, after Rory ended his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. He proposed to Erica in December 2015, and they married in April 2017. In 2020, they welcomed their daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy.
