The past few months have been challenging for Rory McIlroy, marked by setbacks on and off the golf course. Recently, he was denied a spot back on the PGA Board and is navigating a public divorce. Adding to the tumult, reports have surfaced that McIlroy attended a PGA event appearing to be under the influence of alcohol.
This incident occurred during the Canadian Open, coinciding with his caddie Harry Diamond’s birthday week. McIlroy admitted to celebrating the occasion enthusiastically. “A bit of a slow start,” he said after his round. “Harry’s birthday dinner last night, so had a couple of glasses of wine. I was probably feeling a little groggy when I woke up.”
This was not the only celebration McIlroy has partaken in recently. “I went to one of my best friends’ weddings in Italy for four days, which was a lot of fun. It was good to see a lot of people from home I haven’t seen in a long time,” he shared. “Yeah, it was actually a really good trip; I needed it.”
McIlroy further reflected on his recent activities. “Then I had a great weekend at home,” he continued. “I spent time with my family and with [daughter] Poppy, and, yeah, it was awesome. So, I needed that reset. I’m playing four weeks in a row here. I’m ready to go, but yeah, it’s been a busy stretch, and I’m sort of easing my way back into it.”
Despite these distractions, McIlroy’s performance on the course remained strong, as he managed to shoot an impressive opening round of 66.
