Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy is set to begin his quest for a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, several golfers from the LIV Golf tour have failed to qualify for the event. McIlroy, a vocal critic of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, reignited his feud with the tour by criticizing its standard of play compared to the PGA Tour.
The 35-year-old has consistently opposed LIV Golf, which has attracted numerous high-profile players with lucrative events and salaries. McIlroy believes that the quality of play on LIV Golf does not measure up to that of the PGA Tour. He also pointed out that LIV Golf players might now face difficulties qualifying for prestigious competitions like the Olympics due to their decision to join the breakaway venture.
When asked if the Olympic golf event would suffer due to the absence of some top players, McIlroy delivered a blunt response. “I mean, I don’t think there’s any other way to do it because it’s hard to compare the golf that they play to the golf that we play. That’s the reason they didn’t get World Ranking points, right?” McIlroy told reporters.
He added, “So if you want to qualify for the Olympics, you knew what you had to do. Just like if you wanted to qualify for the Ryder Cup, you knew what you had to do. They were very aware of the decision they made when they did.”
