Rory McIlroy has been a central figure in many high-profile stories over the past few years, from his contentious battles with LIV Golf to his resignation from the PGA Tour Policy Board and his recent divorce.
Speaking from the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ontario, Canada, McIlroy reflected on his involvement in the PGA Tour-LIV Golf conflict. “I think, in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten involved or not hadn’t gotten involved, hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved in it, and I’ve articulated that,” McIlroy said.
Initially, McIlroy was one of the most vocal critics of LIV Golf and the players who defected from the PGA Tour. However, the PGA Tour eventually reached a significant agreement with LIV Golf in June 2023 to resolve their legal disputes. This deal was made without McIlroy’s knowledge, leaving him feeling embarrassed and betrayed after having publicly supported the PGA Tour.
McIlroy’s strong stance against LIV created friction with many of his colleagues and diverted his attention from his game and family. Reflecting on this, he expressed regret about his deep involvement in the issue. “But in hindsight I wish I hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved as I have,” he reiterated.
Despite these distractions, McIlroy remains ranked No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, he likely wonders how his performance and results might have differed had he focused more exclusively on his golf rather than the politics between the competing leagues.
