Strong winds wreaked havoc on day two of the 152nd Open at Royal Troon, causing scores to soar and many star players to exit early.
Tiger Woods matched his worst score for two rounds in a major, adding a 77 to his opening 79, totaling 156—equivalent to his performance at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay. Woods was not alone in struggling with the conditions; 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark carded an 80, while his predecessor Matt Fitzpatrick posted a 78.
Rory McIlroy faced a tough challenge to make the cut after an opening 78. His faint hopes vanished as he covered the first five holes in five over par. A dropped shot on the third was followed by a triple-bogey eighth on the fourth, where he struggled to advance his ball from heavy rough, missed the green with his fourth shot, and then chipped into a greenside bunker.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, considered a favorite after his Scottish Open victory, saw his hopes dashed with a disastrous start to his second round. MacIntyre needed two attempts to escape a greenside bunker on the first hole, resulting in a triple bogey. He dropped shots on the second and third holes and made another triple bogey on the par-five fourth.
Justin Thomas, a two-time major winner who was third after an opening 68, struggled as well. He limped to the turn in 45, with a triple bogey, a double bogey, and four bogeys on his card.
The worst score of the day belonged to Japan’s Aguri Iwasaki, who shot a 20-over-par 91. His round included consecutive nines on the par-four 13th and par-three 14th, as well as a triple-bogey seven on the 18th.
