Rory McIlroy’s eventful second round at the Players Championship could be described as anything but ordinary, highlighted by a peculiar encounter with a frog at the par-three third hole.
Entering Friday’s play as one of the co-leaders alongside Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark, McIlroy aimed to build on his impressive opening round of seven-under-par, 65. However, his second round didn’t quite go according to plan, as he struggled to replicate his previous day’s form, posting a one-over 73 and slipping well behind the pace set by Clark.
The Irishman’s round got off to a frustrating start with a bogey on the first hole, following a wayward tee shot and approach shot that left him in trouble in the left-hand bunker. Nonetheless, McIlroy swiftly recovered with a birdie on the par-five second hole, showing his trademark resilience early on.
But the real drama unfolded at the par-three third hole, where McIlroy found himself in the thick green-side rough after pushing his tee shot to the right. As he prepared to play his next shot, a frog unexpectedly hopped into action, causing the 34-year-old to momentarily step away from his ball. Despite the interruption, McIlroy failed to save par, adding another bogey to his card.
With Clark posting another impressive round in the morning session, McIlroy was eager to mount a comeback and narrow the gap. He showed signs of momentum with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes, only to be plagued by bogeys once again, including a costly five at the par-four sixth hole.
After steadying himself with consecutive pars, McIlroy managed to finish the front nine with a much-needed birdie, bringing him to one-under for the day. However, his struggles continued on the back nine, as he dropped another shot with a bogey on the 12th hole, followed by a double bogey on the 13th.
Despite his valiant efforts to regain momentum with four consecutive pars to close out his round, McIlroy finished the day with a one-over 73, trailing leader Clark by eight shots. Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele, also in contention, expressed his confidence in chasing down his Ryder Cup teammate, emphasizing the importance of sticking to one’s own process in the pursuit of success.
As the tournament headed into the weekend, Clark held a commanding four-shot lead over the field, with Nick Taylor and Xander Schauffele tied for second place at 10-under. With the leaderboard tightly packed, the stage was set for an intriguing battle for the Players Championship title.
