Rory McIlroy was spotted wearing his wedding ring at the Scottish Open, marking his return to competition after calling off his divorce from Erica Stoll last month.
The Northern Irish golf star is making his first competitive appearance since missing out on the US Open title last month. McIlroy took a three-week break from the sport, stepping back from the golfing spotlight after his struggles at Pinehurst and the drama surrounding his divorce reversal.
The four-time major winner will officially return to golf in Scotland, participating in the first tournament before the Open Championship. McIlroy participated in the Pro-Am event on Friday ahead of the Scottish Open.
During the event, McIlroy was seen wearing his wedding ring, signaling a reconciliation with his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. He had announced the decision to call off the divorce on the eve of the US Open.
Just a month earlier, before the PGA Championship in May, McIlroy had announced that he and Erica were splitting due to their marriage being “irretrievably broken.” During that tournament, he was seen playing without his wedding ring.
Addressing the speculation about his relationship status in a statement to The Guardian, McIlroy said, “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
