Golf presenter Amanda Balionis recently took to Instagram to celebrate her “success” while golf star Rory McIlroy retreated to his $17 million Florida mansion with his wife, Erica Stoll, following a heart-wrenching performance at the US Open. CBS Sports’ Balionis enjoyed some time off with friends in the Hamptons, soaking up the sun and sharing photos in bikinis from her break at Pinehurst No. 2. She humorously captioned one of her posts with: “(mon)Tauk about off-week success.” Her lively update came shortly after McIlroy’s close call at the tournament, stirring up old rumors about a possible romantic connection between them, especially since he narrowly missed winning his first major in a decade.
McIlroy had a two-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round at Pinehurst No. 2 but faltered by bogeying three of his last four holes, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to clinch the victory. The anguish was evident on McIlroy’s face as he watched DeChambeau celebrate on the final green. Following the tournament, McIlroy returned to his Florida home with Erica. The couple had considered separating last month but decided against divorce at the last minute. During their brief rift, speculation about McIlroy and Balionis grew, especially since she was seen without her wedding ring and sharing a comforting hug with McIlroy after the Canadian Open earlier in the month.
Despite the past rumors, any talk of a romance between McIlroy and Balionis has been quashed, with McIlroy committed to making his marriage work. While McIlroy faced a disappointing weekend, he took to social media to announce plans for a short break from golf.
“Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I’ve had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer,” McIlroy wrote. “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that.”
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy added, “I’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the two missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I’ll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives.”
He continued, “As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have. The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I’ve shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again.”
McIlroy concluded by announcing his plan to take a brief hiatus from the sport to regroup and prepare for his title defense at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. “See you in Scotland,” he concluded.
