Rory McIlroy shared an emotional moment with his family following another tough loss at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, where Billy Horschel clinched the victory. McIlroy, a four-time major champion, was comforted by his wife Erica Stoll and their daughter Poppy after narrowly missing out on another title in what has been a challenging season.
McIlroy came heartbreakingly close to the championship win, losing to Horschel, who secured victory with an eagle on the second playoff hole. This defeat continued McIlroy’s winless streak since June, where he let a two-shot lead slip during the final five holes of the US Open, extending his decade-long drought in the majors. McIlroy also suffered disappointment in the Olympics, missing out on a medal, and endured another setback at the Irish Open, where Rasmus Hojgaard took the title after McIlroy dropped two crucial bogeys late in the final round.

Sunday’s playoff at Wentworth featured McIlroy, Horschel, and Thriston Lawrence, all tied at 20-under-par. Lawrence was eliminated after the first playoff hole, carding a bogey while McIlroy and Horschel both made birdies. The final showdown between McIlroy and Horschel saw both players set up eagle chances, but McIlroy narrowly missed his, while Horschel sank his to become the first American to win the prestigious tournament twice, adding to his 2021 triumph.
Despite the heartache, McIlroy graciously congratulated Horschel with a smile. After completing his media duties, McIlroy was seen sharing a tender moment with his family as he prepared to leave. In a touching video shared by the DP World Tour, McIlroy was shown embracing his four-year-old daughter Poppy, softly asking her, “Have you had a good day?” Moments later, his wife Erica joined the scene, and the couple shared a kiss.
McIlroy had recently opened up about his difficult year both on and off the course during an interview on RTE’s *Late Late Show*. Earlier in the year, McIlroy revealed that he and Erica had been briefly separated, announcing in May that their marriage was “irretrievably broken” and they were heading for a divorce. However, just a month later, the couple reconciled and confirmed they were moving forward together. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together,” McIlroy said at the time. “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
Reflecting on his tumultuous year, McIlroy shared with *Late Late Show* host Patrick Kielty that the pressure of his career and personal life had taken a toll. “Sometimes life can just get a lot, and it can become too much,” he admitted. “There’s been a lot going on this year, both with golf and on a personal level. I needed to take a break, to step back from the game and everything that comes with it.”
McIlroy explained that golf had become all-consuming in recent years, pushing him to re-evaluate what truly mattered. “Golf and the business of golf had taken over for me, and I needed to step away and remember what’s really important—friends, family, and enjoying life,” he reflected. “I was just a little boy from Holywood who’s grown into something more, and I need to enjoy this journey.”
