Rory McIlroy, currently competing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland, was supported by his wife, Erica Stoll, who was seen cheering him on as he posted a score of 69 during what McIlroy described as a “perfect day” at the event. This public appearance comes only weeks after the couple was seen sharing a kiss at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey, where McIlroy finished as runner-up to American golfer Billy Horschel. A heartwarming moment from that event, in which McIlroy hugged his four-year-old daughter, Poppy, and kissed Erica, was shared by the DP World Tour’s Twitter account with the caption, “Losing is hard. Family makes it easier.”
The couple’s affectionate moments suggest they are in a good place following a difficult period earlier this year, during which they briefly considered separating. Less than a month after Erica Stoll, 36, was served divorce papers at their home in Jupiter, Florida, the two reconciled and called off the divorce. McIlroy later addressed the rumors surrounding their relationship in a statement just before the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where he again finished as runner-up. “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” he stated. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
In addition to spending time with his wife, McIlroy was seen walking and conversing with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Though the content of their conversation was not disclosed, the two were photographed sharing a laugh. Al-Rumayyan had also participated earlier in the day in a Pro-Am event alongside PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, with the two reportedly embracing, signaling a potential resolution to the long-standing conflict between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
McIlroy hinted at progress toward reconciliation between the two golfing organizations, stating, “There’s no better place than the home of golf to try and get everyone together and talking.” He praised Johann Rupert, the owner of the Dunhill event, for working to unite the sport, saying, “If we need to be forced together in some way, he’s trying to do that.”
Optimistic about the future, McIlroy expressed hope that a resolution could be reached by the end of the year, noting, “We’re in October, so hopefully three months to get something done.”
