Erica Stoll, wife of golfer Rory McIlroy, was notably absent as McIlroy missed the cut at The Open on Friday, attributing his recent struggles to his “messy” life.
On the second day of the 152nd Open at Royal Troon, the Northern Irish golfer faced a tough challenge to make the cut after an opening round of 78. His slim hopes vanished after covering the first five holes in five over par. Following a dropped shot on the third hole, McIlroy made a triple-bogey on the fourth, struggling to advance the ball from heavy rough, missing the green with his fourth shot, and then chipping into a bunker.
Despite his difficulties, the 35-year-old didn’t give up. He managed to reduce his score to 12 over par by scooping the ball from a bunker on the 14th hole. However, McIlroy’s major drought now extends to 11 years after missing the cut at The Open.
McIlroy had played in the Scottish Open the previous week, where his wife attended, and tied for fourth place. He was optimistic about his form going into the final major of the year. However, unexpected wind directions at Royal Troon disrupted his plans, jeopardizing his bid to end his decade-long major drought.
While McIlroy’s performance on the golf course has been challenging, his personal life has also been tumultuous. Last month, he and his wife ended divorce proceedings. The couple shares a three-year-old daughter, Poppy, who turns four in September. News of their reconciliation emerged when McIlroy arrived at the last major in May, following the filing for divorce.
Two days before the US Open, it was reported that the divorce proceedings were closed in Palm Beach County, Florida, where McIlroy was competing in the Wells Fargo Championship. In a statement to The Guardian, McIlroy said, “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
