Rory McIlroy’s stance on LIV Golf seems to be shifting, with the golfer expressing a more open-minded perspective towards potentially joining the league.
Initially, McIlroy vehemently opposed the idea, stating in 2023 that if LIV Golf was the last place to play golf on earth, he would retire. However, recent statements suggest a softened stance.
In a February 28 interview ahead of the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach, Florida, McIlroy hinted at the possibility of signing with commissioner Greg Norman’s venture. Responding to comments made by Chandler, McIlroy remarked, “[You] never know. He might know a few things. Who knows.”
While Chandler estimated the likelihood of McIlroy joining LIV Golf to be between good and 10%, McIlroy suggested it might be somewhere in the middle.
Former manager Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler even suggested that McIlroy could leave the PGA Tour to join the Saudi-backed rival LIV Golf for a speculated $946 million deal.
Reflecting on his initial resistance, McIlroy acknowledged a shift in perspective, recognizing that not everyone is in his or Tiger Woods’ position. He admitted to reconsidering his stance over the past two years, understanding the financial motivations behind such decisions.
McIlroy’s evolving outlook reflects the complexities of navigating professional sports and financial opportunities.
