Rory McIlroy leveraged the power of positive thinking to launch a flawless start to his latest U.S. Open campaign on June 13, delivering an impressive five-under par 65 at Pinehurst. The Northern Irish golfer, aiming to end a decade-long drought at the Majors, finished his round with five birdies, placing him in a tie for the lead alongside American Patrick Cantlay. McIlroy attributed his recent success at the tournament, including a runner-up finish last year, to his improved mental outlook.
Reflecting on his approach, McIlroy said, “I guess I’ve had some success by the sort of mindset that I’ve brought in, especially last year at LACC.” He noted that while the golf course at Pinehurst had some differences from last year, his strategy and mindset remained consistent.
Having clinched a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in May, McIlroy expressed to reporters that he felt closer than ever to securing a long-awaited fifth Major title. His confidence was evident from the outset, with his first birdie coming on the challenging par-four fourth hole. He followed this up with a spectacular chip-in from nearly 67 feet on the par-five fifth. McIlroy continued to shave strokes off his score with birdies on the par-five 10th and the par-four 16th, culminating in a birdie putt from over 19 feet on the final hole.
McIlroy has maintained a strong track record at the U.S. Open, not finishing outside the top 10 since 2018. This year, his focus is on maintaining a “super stoic” and “even-keeled” demeanor. “I really feel like that’s the thing that has served me well in these U.S. Opens over the past few years,” he said. Emphasizing the importance of commitment, McIlroy added, “Just trying to be 100 percent committed to the shots and 100 percent committed to having a good attitude.”
His impressive start at Pinehurst has set the stage for a promising campaign, as McIlroy remains determined to break his decade-long Major title drought with an unwavering positive mindset.
