After a disappointing finish to last season, where the Philadelphia Eagles were knocked out in the wild-card round, the team looks revitalized in the new season.
One of the key offseason additions is star running back Saquon Barkley, who signed as a free agent from the New York Giants. Barkley made an immediate impact in Week 1, leading the Eagles to a victory over the Green Bay Packers with an impressive 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Barkley handled the ball 26 times in his debut but isn’t worried about the heavy workload. “I think we manage it well here,” Barkley told Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 WIP Sports Radio. “I train hard in the offseason to prepare for this.”
Despite his strong start, there remains some concern over Barkley’s injury history. Since his rookie year in 2018, he has only completed one full regular season. Last year, he played 14 games for the Giants, recording 962 rushing yards, six touchdowns, and adding 41 receptions for 280 yards and four touchdowns.
Paired with dynamic quarterback Jalen Hurts, who rushed for 605 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, Barkley adds to the Eagles’ potent ground attack.
However, the key to Philadelphia’s success this season may lie in fixing a defense that struggled last year after performing at a Super Bowl level in 2022. The Eagles have brought in Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator, along with pass rusher Bryce Huff and promising rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, in an effort to revitalize their defense.
